50 Years ago when a patient told a doctor that they were depressed the doctor would listen sympathetically and tell the patient that every one goes through this at some point in their life and they will get through it. One could say that the doctor was imparting hope, flash forward to today and more than likely the patient will walk out of the doctor’s office clutching a script for Zoloft, Prozac, Celexa and the list goes on. Currently 31 million Americans are on one of the aforementioned drugs.
A study published in the Journal of American Medicine stated that antidepressants work as well as a placebo. Thomas Moore an analyst with George Washington University discovered that 40 percent of studies on this class of drug were never published. Why? Because in these studies the antidepressants did not work. A U.S. government study revealed that fewer tan 50% of people become symptom free on anti-depressants, despite trying two different medications.
Even the side effects are depressing; nausea, weight gain, insomnia, restlessness, anxiety sleepiness, diarrhea, constipation, etc., and there is a risk of suicide amongst teens on anti depressants.
