Death by Sugar

Weston A. Price, DDS, spent his life examining the dental structures of people groups around the world. He documented the effects of poor nutrition on the narrowing structure of the face and the strength of teeth. He also witnessed the generational degradation of health due to poor food choices.

Death by Sugar

On one of his trips down the Panama Canal he observed that workers on the sugar cane plantations would cut sugar cane all day while chewing on a piece of sugar cane. He went into the fields and examined the health of the workers and he discovered that their health was exceptional with a broad facial structure, no dental caries, and they could work hard all day. He also observed that these workers were part of a long line of healthy generations that cut sugar cane.

When Dr. Price met with the owners of the plantations and the refiners of the sugar cane, the health of these individuals was markedly different than the workers. This was because of the plantation owners high consumption of white refined sugar and the baked goods sugar was used in. They were generationally plagued by chronic disease, gout, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, fatigue, dental caries, and the facial structure of their children were narrowed and their teeth were crowded.

Nancy Appleton, Ph. D., and G. N. Jacobs wrote a phenomenal book called Suicide by Sugar. In it they list 141 reasons why sugar is ruining your health. Definitely worth a read if you ever wondered if sugar was affecting your health.

The average person consumes 142 pounds of sugar per year! This equals to about 48 teaspoons or 1/2 cup of sugar a day!

Beware of Hidden Sugars

4 grams of sugar equals 1 teaspoon of sugar.

  • A 2 ounce glass of fruit juice contains the same amount of sugar as a can of soda, 6.5 teaspoons of sugar.
  • Chocolate flavored PediaSure contains 24 grams of sugar = 6 teaspoons of sugar.
  • Ensure contains 40 grams of sugar = 10 teaspoons of sugar.
  • Gatorade has 14 grams of sugar = 3.5 teaspoons of sugar.

Sugar throws off the health balance in the body and eating too much sugar can leave phagocytes depleted. Phagocytes are the white blood cells that protect the body by ingesting (phagocytosing) harmful foreign particles, bacteria, and dead or dying cells. They are essential for fighting infections and for subsequent immunity. 100 grams (approximately 25 teaspoons) of sugar stops the functioning of the phagocytes according to a study done by The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Because sugar is devoid of minerals, vitamins, fiber, and has compromising effect on the endocrine system, glands such as the thyroid and adrenals can be reduced to a slower than normal activity by excess intake of sugar. Our health status is related to the functioning of the adrenal glands. One of the nutrients that is most important to the adrenal glands are B vitamins and they are easily drained out of the body due to sugar consumption.

Cancer cells are glucose obligate metabolizers, tumors use sugar to grow. Elevating blood glucose in a person with diabetes is like throwing lighter fuel on cancer. In the largest study worldwide on the combined risk of diabetes and cancer, researchers found that people affected by type 2 diabetes have an elevated risk of 24 of the types of cancer studied. (Source: Nicole Schuster, Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum) Could this be due to the higher rate of circulating glucose in a diabetic?

Other Health Conditions Effected by Sugar Consumption

  • Canker sores
  • Psoriasis
